The Difference Between American Ginseng and Panax Quinquefolius

Early Americans discovered that the native Indians of the American continent often ate the root of a plant. Later, research confirmed that this plant was American ginseng of the Araliaceae family. Eating its root can relieve fatigue. Later research gradually deepened and it was widely consumed. Because it is native to the United States, it was often called American ginseng in the early days, or American ginseng imported from the United States and Canada, and it has become a habit in some places. Some places are used to calling it American ginseng. There are many kinds of American ginseng products on the market, which are dazzling. How to distinguish the authenticity of American ginseng should attract the attention of consumers.

American ginseng is a type of ginseng. It is named after the United States, which was formerly known as the United States. American ginseng research reports point out that American ginseng is native to the area from northern United States to southern Canada, mainly in Wisconsin. It is usually divided into American ginseng and Canadian ginseng according to the place of origin; although the two are the same species, due to the influence of climate, the horizontal stripes on the surface of the former are more obvious than those of the latter, and the content of active ingredients is also higher. American ginseng also has a significant effect of increasing white blood cells, promoting growth, and improving the body's immune function. It can be taken by men, women, young and old in all seasons. Therefore, American ginseng has a high medicinal value. Therefore, its medicinal value and product added value are fully recognized by the market.

American ginseng, also known as American ginseng, is listed as one of the three major tonic products in China along with dendrobium and deer antler. There are two types of American ginseng on the current market in my country, one is imported and the other is domestically introduced. Imported American ginseng has a good taste, a strong aroma, bitterness with sweetness, and the best efficacy. Most of the American ginseng sold on the market and in pharmacies for a few yuan per gram are domestically introduced. Only a few large brands such as Fulinmen American ginseng and Tongrentang can buy imported American ginseng, with prices ranging from more than ten to more than twenty yuan per gram. Among them, Tongrentang is the most expensive and has the most beautiful packaging, suitable for gifts; Fulinmen American ginseng is aimed at household customers, with a more affordable price, suitable for home use.

Imported American ginseng: Imported American ginseng is white in color, with fine and dense horizontal stripes on the surface, light in weight, and less powdery; the cross section is relatively flat, slightly colloid, with fine chrysanthemum texture; the aroma is strong, the taste is slightly sweet and bitter, the taste is refreshing, and the taste can last for a long time. Domestic ginseng has coarse horizontal stripes on the surface, heavy and hard, and sufficient powder; the cross section is uneven, the inner layer of the slice is mostly solid without chrysanthemum heart texture, no special aroma, chewing bitter or light, light and slightly astringent after a long time, and sticky to the tongue. The surface of imported ginseng is earthy yellow, the horizontal stripes are gray-black and dense, the inside is yellow-white, the texture is light and the skin is fine; the cross section is flat, slightly horny, with fine chrysanthemum texture, the aroma is special, fragrant and strong, the taste is bitter and sweet, and the taste is long-lasting. The root of domestic ginseng has few horizontal rings, deep vertical stripes, hard texture, uneven fracture, solid, and no chrysanthemum texture; the aroma is light, the taste is bitter and light sweet, and it is astringent after a long time of chewing, and slightly sticky to the tongue.

Cultivated American ginseng: The surface has rough horizontal stripes, the texture is heavy and firm, and it is powdery; the cross-section is uneven, the inner layer of the slice is mostly solid without chrysanthemum heart texture, and there is no special fragrance. It tastes bitter or light when chewed, and becomes light and slightly astringent after a long time, and sticks to the tongue.

Some points to note when choosing American ginseng

1. It depends on the origin. Is it wild American ginseng from the United States, cultivated American ginseng, or American ginseng introduced and cultivated in China? Different origins have different tastes and effects, and naturally different prices;

2. It depends on the year. Generally, American ginseng can be harvested after 3-6 years of planting. The longer the better. Due to cost factors, most American ginseng on the market is generally only three and a half years old, and the shortest American ginseng from Fulinmen and Tongrentang is 6 years old.

3. It depends on the shape. The American ginseng with clear reed head and light weight is good ginseng. You can compare them on the spot to see the difference between good ginseng and bad ginseng.

How to identify American ginseng

(1) Genuine American ginseng

There are two types of American ginseng on the Chinese market: one is imported and the other is introduced. The two have similar effects, but the introduced American ginseng is much cheaper than the imported one. Although both are genuine, there are subtle differences, mainly:

① Appearance. Due to the different natural conditions such as climate and soil, the appearance of the two is slightly different.

The imported products have a yellowish brown surface, with fine gray-black horizontal stripes, and a yellow-white interior with fine chrysanthemum texture. The domestic introduced varieties have few horizontal rings on the root head, slightly deeper vertical stripes, and less obvious chrysanthemum texture. American ginseng is divided into super large branches, extra large branches, large branches, medium branches, and small branches according to size.

② Compared with introduced ginseng, imported American ginseng is heavier in weight, has finer skin and a flat cross-section; domestically introduced ginseng feels firm and hard when touched, and has an uneven cross-section.

③ Smell. The imported products have a strong and fragrant smell; the introduced products have a lighter smell.

④ Taste. Imported varieties have a bitter and sweet taste, with a long-lasting taste; introduced varieties have a stronger bitter taste and a lighter sweet taste, which becomes light and astringent after a while.

The common characteristics of the two authentic American ginsengs are: the ginseng is cone-shaped, as thick and long as a finger, without stalks or whiskers, with 5 to 10 obvious ring marks near the head, with transversely protruding lenticels on the surface, hard and heavy in texture, granular in cross section, with a light brown ring mark, and scattered brown-yellow oil spots, no odor, and slightly bitter.

(2) Fake American ginseng

The main characteristics of fake American ginseng: fake ginseng is also conical, but slightly longer, with sparse rings on the surface and distributed all over the body, slightly soft and light, and not granular in cross section. The powder has obvious chrysanthemum patterns, no obvious brown oil spots, and tastes sweet and cool, with a lighter bitterness or no bitterness. In addition, white ginseng and adenophora are processed and sold as American ginseng

① White ginseng. It is cylindrical, with a long taproot and many rings on the top. The needles used in processing can be seen all over the body.

There are thorn-like marks and the horizontal lines are fine and dense. There are 1 to 3 lateral roots at the bottom, which are longer, pale white in surface, hard and heavy, with a slight fragrance and a sweet and slightly bitter taste.

② Adenophora Root. Mostly bitter.
