Dried Yam Shan ( Rhizoma Dioscoreae ) 16 oz
Chinese yam can be cooked as a vegetable or dried as a Chinese medicinal material. The Compendium of Materia Medica records its efficacy as: "It strengthens the spleen and replenishes the body, nourishes the essence and strengthens the kidney, cures all kinds of diseases, and treats the five kinds of fatigue and seven kinds of injuries." Before the Tang Dynasty, Chinese yam was mainly derived from wild yam. It began to be cultivated in the Song Dynasty, but doctors believed that wild yam was of superior quality. After the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was mainly derived from cultivated yam. Medicinal yam is mainly produced in Henan Province, and is known as the "Four Major Huai Medicines" together with Achyranthes bidentata, Rehmannia glutinosa and Chrysanthemum.
